Delicious Chocolate Cake Recipe

History and Fun Facts:
Chocolate cake has been a beloved dessert for centuries, with its rich and decadent flavor capturing the hearts of people worldwide. The origins of chocolate cake can be traced back to the 18th century in Europe, where chocolate began to be used in baking.

Fun Fact: The first recorded chocolate cake recipe can be found in a cookbook titled "American Cookery" by Amelia Simmons, published in 1796.

Over time, chocolate cake recipes have evolved and transformed, incorporating different ingredients and techniques. Miriam De Wolfe, a renowned pastry chef, has created a mouthwatering recipe for Delicious Chocolate Cake that we will be sharing with you today.

Recipe:

Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup sweet milk
- 3 scant cups flour
- 3 teaspoonfuls baking powder
- 5 egg whites, beaten to a stiff froth

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Gradually add the sweet milk to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with the flour and baking powder. Mix well after each addition until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form a stiff froth. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the cake batter until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops for an even surface.

6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Icing:

Ingredients:
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 egg white, beaten to a stiff froth
- 1 (10 cent) cake of German chocolate, grated

Instructions:
1. In a saucepan, heat the sugar over medium heat until it reaches the taffy stage. To test, drop a small amount into a cup of cold water. The sugar should form a firm ball.

2. While the sugar is heating, beat the egg white to a stiff froth in a separate bowl.

3. Once the sugar reaches the taffy stage, remove it from the heat and immediately stir in the beaten egg white and grated German chocolate. Continue stirring until the icing is almost cold.

Assembly:
1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of the chocolate icing on top.

2. Carefully place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining icing. You can be creative with your frosting technique, using a spatula or piping bag to create different patterns.

3. Decorate the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or any desired toppings for an extra touch of flavor and presentation.
