Devil's Food Cake Recipe by Mrs. G. H. Wright

Part I:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
- 1 level teaspoon soda
- Yolks of 3 eggs
- Whites of 2 eggs

Part II:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sweet milk
- 1 cup grated chocolate

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, butter, sour milk, sifted flour, soda, yolks of three eggs, and whites of two eggs. Stir the ingredients together until well combined.

3. In a separate saucepan, combine the brown sugar, sweet milk, and grated chocolate. Place the saucepan on the stove over low heat and let the mixture dissolve. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is fully melted.

4. Pour the warm chocolate mixture into Part I and mix until well incorporated.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Icing:

You can use your preferred icing for Devil's Food Cake, such as buttercream or cream cheese frosting. Here's a simple chocolate icing recipe to get you started:

- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In a mixing bowl, sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder together to remove any lumps.

2. Add the softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract to the bowl.

3. Using an electric mixer, beat the ingredients on low speed until they start to combine. Then increase the speed to medium and continue beating until smooth and creamy.

Assembling the Cake:

1. Once the cakes have cooled completely, place one layer on a serving plate or cake stand.

2. Spread a generous amount of icing on top of the first cake layer.

3. Carefully place the second cake layer on top of the icing.

4. Use the remaining icing to frost the top and sides of the cake, creating a smooth and even layer.

5. For extra decoration, you can sprinkle some grated chocolate or chocolate shavings on top of the cake.

6. Slice and serve the Devil's Food Cake, and enjoy!
