Rye Rolls Recipe

Rye Rolls Recipe

History:
Rye rolls have a rich history, with rye being one of the oldest cultivated grains. These rolls have their origins in Europe, where rye bread has been a staple for centuries. Rye was commonly grown in colder climates where other crops struggled to thrive, making it an important food source.

Fun Fact:
Rye bread was often associated with the lower classes in medieval Europe, as wheat bread was considered more refined and prestigious. Rye rolls, in particular, were favored by farmers and laborers due to its hearty and filling nature.

Ingredients:
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 teaspoons Dr. Price's Baking Powder
- 1 tablespoon shortening
- 1-1/2 cups milk

Instructions:
1. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder in a mixing bowl.
2. Rub in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Add the milk and mix with a spoon until a smooth dough forms, which should be easy to handle on a floured board.
4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead quickly a few times to impart smoothness.
5. Divide the dough into small pieces and form each piece by hand into short, rather thick, tapering rolls.
6. Place the rolls on greased pans or baking sheets and allow them to stand in a warm place for 15 to 20 minutes.
7. Brush the rolls with milk before baking.
8. Bake the rolls in a very hot oven until they are almost fully baked.
9. Remove the rolls from the oven and brush them again with melted butter.
10. Bake the rolls for an additional 10 minutes until they are golden brown.
11. Serve the rye rolls hot.

Fun Fact:
Rye rolls are versatile and can be enjoyed on their own, but they are also perfect for making delicious sandwiches. The dense and flavorful texture of rye adds depth to any filling. Some filling ideas include lettuce and mayonnaise, sliced or chopped ham, chopped seasoned cucumbers, egg and mayonnaise with a little chopped onion and parsley, or any other filling of your choice.
