Mince Meat Recipe

Mince Meat Recipe:

History and Fun Facts:
The origins of mince meat can be traced back to the Middle Ages when it was initially made with chopped meat, dried fruits, and spices. It was a way to preserve meat and create a rich and savory filling for pies. Over time, the recipe evolved, and the addition of suet, sugar, and alcohol became common.

In the 17th century, mince meat had become a popular dish in Britain, often associated with Christmas celebrations. It was believed to bring good luck and prosperity to those who consumed it during the festive season. In fact, it was customary to make large batches of mince meat and preserve it for months to enhance its flavor.

Interestingly, in the United States, mince meat gained popularity in the 19th century when it was associated with Thanksgiving. An American variation of the recipe included the addition of apples, which provided a sweet and tangy contrast to the rich and spiced meat filling.

Mince Meat Recipe:

Ingredients:
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 pound suet (beef or vegetable suet)
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup currants
- 1 cup chopped apples
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup candied peel (e.g., orange or lemon)
- 1/2 cup chopped almonds
- 1/2 cup apple cider
- 1/2 cup brandy or rum
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions:

1. In a large saucepan, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.

2. Grate or finely chop the suet and add it to the saucepan with the ground beef. Stir and cook for a few minutes until the suet starts to melt.

3. Add the raisins, currants, chopped apples, brown sugar, candied peel, chopped almonds, apple cider, brandy or rum, lemon zest, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and salt to the saucepan. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. This will allow the flavors to meld and the fruits to plump up.

5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mince meat cool completely.

6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

7. Roll out one pie crust and line a pie plate with it. Pour the cooled mince meat filling into the pie crust.

8. Roll out the second pie crust and cover the filling, sealing the edges by crimping or pressing with a fork.

9. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.

10. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

11. Remove from the oven and let the mince pie cool for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy the rich and flavorful mince meat pie warm or at room temperature!
