Fruit Shortcakes Recipe

Fruit Shortcakes Recipe

History:
Shortcakes have been enjoyed for centuries, with variations of the recipe appearing in different cultures around the world. The concept of a shortcake originated in Europe, where it was primarily made with flour, butter, and sugar. As it made its way to America, the recipe evolved to include a wider variety of ingredients and flavors.

Fun Facts:
- The first recorded recipe for shortcake can be traced back to an English cookbook from the 16th century.
- Shortcake is commonly associated with summertime, as it is often served with fresh fruits that are abundant during this season.
- In the United States, strawberry shortcake is an iconic dessert that gained popularity in the 19th century.

Recipe:

Ingredients:
- 6 tablespoons shortening
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1-1/2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons Dr. Price's Baking Powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup seeded raisins
- 2 tablespoons cut citron

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to a moderate temperature.

2. In a mixing bowl, cream the shortening. Then add the brown sugar and beaten egg. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined.

3. Slowly add the milk to the mixture, stirring continuously.

4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, cloves, allspice, and cinnamon.

5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring slowly until a soft dough forms.

6. Chop the raisins and cut the citron into small pieces. Dredge them in flour to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the shortcakes.

7. Add the chopped fruit to the dough and gently fold them in until evenly distributed.

8. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto greased baking tins, leaving enough space between each one for them to expand during baking.

9. Place the tins in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until the shortcakes turn golden brown.

10. Once baked, remove the shortcakes from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Serve the fruit shortcakes warm with your favorite fresh fruits and a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream for a delightful dessert.
